  • Steve Croot, owner of Croots Farm Shop & Kitchen in Derbyshire, has welcomed some new arrivals

I’ve added some new items to our shelves, strengthening our gluten-free range and adding to our confectionery selection: we’re asked increasingly for products that are suitable for customers with allergies, and I’ve started selling a few new sweets like love hearts, traffic light lollies and candy necklaces. Grandparents and parents are enjoying introducing the younger generation to some of the treats they loved as kids.

Valentine’s Day gave us an opportunity to serve up a new strawberry and champagne sausage. We named it Cupid’s Love Sausage (!) and sold out by the end of the day.

We’ve also been featured as part of a BBC Inside Out programme in the East Midlands - a show focusing on businesses that started in the recession. It was great exposure for us, and there were definitely a few new faces in the shop over the following days.

Last, but by no means least, it’s important to mention the arrival of two cute Shire horse foals in the fields just in front of the shop; Edmund and Katy. They’ve quickly become very popular with customers and lots of people have been coming along to take photos of them. We’re expecting four more foals over the coming weeks.
