  • The Scottish producer of Traditional Ayrshire Dunlop has successfully passed the final stage of its bid for PGI status
Dunlop Dairy Awarded PGI Status

The cheese’s new status means that, although Dunlop Dairy is currently its sole producer, it can be made by other producers so long as this is done within a specified area and using certain techniques.

Ann Elizabeth of Dunlop Dairy said, “We are really pleased to have been awarded this PGI for the Traditional Ayrshire Dunlop.

“This cheese has a great history behind it. Not only was it developed here in Dunlop but the famous Ayrshire cow was first bred in the parish. The mild wet climate here is excellent for growing lush grass and the Ayrshire cow makes a great job converting this into quality milk for the cheese.

“With the name Dunlop being generic all the tradition and origin was in a position to be lost. We are proud to be continuing this tradition and now with the PGI hopefully for years to come.”
