  • An Eastbourne business has beaten off stiff competition from around the UK to be named Local Retailer of the Year in the 2010 Observer Ethical Awards

Local Roots and Wellie Boots, based in the UK’s sunniest resort, scooped the top prize at the glittering awards ceremony in London beating runners up Infinity Foods and Bakery from Brighton and Growing Communities which is based in Hackney, East London.

With issues of sustainability and green living prominent throughout the awards, Local Roots and Wellie Boots, a café and grocery store offering locally sourced produce, received the prestigious prize from Colin Firth and Lucy Siegle recognising their commitment to promoting food and drink from around the region.

Luke Randall, owner of Local Roots and Wellie Boots said “We’d like to say a huge thank you to everybody who voted for us to win the award and for the support they have shown us in Eastbourne. We are looking ahead to a busy summer with various events planned, including continuing our EAT evenings, Airbourne farmers market and hopefully seeing lots of people using a crop swap scheme and bringing us their surplus fruit and veg and exchanging it for something in the shop.”

To celebrate their achievement, Local Roots and Wellie Boots are launching their Veg Box and Food Box scheme further afield. Beverley Randall said “We have been providing Eastbourne with amazing veg and food boxes and want to extend the scheme to Lewes, Brighton, Hove and all of the communities in between.”
