Nearly Half of Consumers Prefer to Buy Local

The survey, carried out by YouGov, found that 48% of people seriously consider the origin of their food.

County food group Hampshire Fare’s main aim is to increase awareness of local food in the area, and welcomed the findings of the report.

Hampshire Fare member Billy Owton, who owns Owtons Butchers, in Southampton, said, “We are the only company who can sell Hampshire beef and a question we get asked more and more is, ‘where does our meat come from?’ We can very proudly say Hampshire, it is our best way through the door when we are approaching new businesses or when they come to us.”

John Harding, the general manager of Chalcroft Farm Shop, also in Southampton, added, “It is our top priority to make sure that what we sell in our two farm shops is locally-produced and it is also a priority of our customers who want to buy locally. Our farm shops are stocked with Hampshire apple juice and our trout is caught from an estate just up the road.”
