Organic Food Sales Continue Decline

The market has dipped by 1.5% so far this year, following on from decreases of 3.7% in 2012, 5.9% in 2010 and nearly 13% in 2009.

However, campaigners are optimistic about the sector, noting the recent increase in trade following the horse meat scandal.

There are also calls for retailers to work more closely with organic growers, to avoid a supply shortage.

Jim Twine, business development director at the Soil Association, said, “Whenever there is a food scare customers look for reassurance. I believe that is why there was a significant spike in sales in February 2013. The report also shows that when retailers have invested in their organic range their share of the market grows.”

Under-35s are also boosting sales in the sector, as they are more ethically aware and increased their average spend on organic food in 2012.
