The adaptation has been made in order to create £130,000 worth of profit for the producer within the next 20 years, and the original cost of £50,000 is expected to pay for itself within the next six years.

Mary Quicke at Quicke’s Traditional said, “We chose to start using renewable energy because of the rising energy costs, and we want to keep our business running on a lower consumption of energy. It has boosted our green credentials and reduces our overhead costs – overall, having the solar PV system installed on our cheese store really benefits us as a business.

“We need to keep our cheese chilled all day and night for up to two years, so this is a way of generating power from the sun to keep our cheese store powered at a lower cost. In the summer months it will generate more power to keep the store refrigerated. It’s all about keeping costs low when it comes to powering our cheese store. The store is a vital part of our business, and because it’s working constantly it can cost a lot of money to keep running.

“Surprisingly, social media has really benefited from this update to our business. People who we’ve spoken to have been really inspired by it, and we’re getting the message out there to other businesses to go green and support the environment. It’s caused a very good ripple through social media, and has led people to get inspired to reduce their energy costs.”
