Recession Bites For Farm Shop Owner

03 October 2011, 14:25 PM
  • A farm shop has closed after facing the plight of the recession and a bout of roadworks which distracted customers from the store

The shop named Whins Farm Shop on Main Road, Harrington was owned by Fiona Tyson and her partner Chris Hunter.

Ms Tyson said of the closure, “The shop was about giving local producers a platform. We use a lot of local suppliers, producers and distributors to try and keep the money in the area. We have got some fantastic customers and we really appreciate everyone’s loyalty but it is just so difficult.

“We have done well over the years, it is just the last two years that it has steadily slipped,” she says.

A loyal customer named Pat Lawson said of the situation, “What a sad thing it is to see local businesses going bust because of roadworks! why isn’t there some kind of fund to help with this type of disruption. its bad enough that the economy sucks but this is the icing on the cake. I have shopped at the farm in Harrington and really enjoyed it. I feel very sad for them.”
