Scotland Celebrates With Food

The Scottish food and drink sector is the country’s largest industry sector, with a £13.1 billion turnover and 330,000 employees, and the fast-growing export sector valued at £5.3 billion.

The Scottish Food Village activity is an extension of the 2014 Food & Drink campaign, a project supported by a collaboration of the Scottish Government, Scotland Food & Drink, Scottish Development International, Scottish Enterprise, Highlands & Islands Enterprise, VisitScotland and EventScotland.

Businesses involved include beef and lamb from Perthshire Producers, Shaken Udder milkshakes and Loch Fyne seafood.

The producers involved have undergone a rigorous application process to ensure that they reflect the philosophies of the Commonwealth Games Food Charter, including safe, healthy and ethical living standards, plus provenance and traceability.

Fiona Richmond, 2014 Project Manager, Scotland Food & Drink said, “Over the course of this unprecedented year of sport and cultural celebrations the Scottish food and drink industry is demonstrating its commitment to showcasing some of the finest products sourced from across Scotland. Our diverse array of quality producers and traders are the cornerstone of our sector’s success story, which we hope to build on at events such as the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2014 Ryder Cup.

“The food and drink opportunities at these events provide a significant economic boost for Scottish businesses. Producers, traders and retailers will get their share of the projected £33m visitors are expected to spend on food and drink at events in 2014, as well as contributing to building the nation’s reputation as a Land of Food and Drink, creating a lasting legacy for the sector in 2015 and beyond.”
