Glasgow deli Grassroots Organic is in the running to become Deli of the Year 2010
The Scottish independent was nominated following the launch of the awards last week.

Dorset food company Olives Et Al organised the search to coincide with Purple Love Week (February 13th-21st).

“We feel that even the smallest post office with a tiny deli-type counter should be celebrated, so we came up with the idea to give everyone a chance,” said Giles Henschel of Olives Et Al.

The response so far has been one of excitement in excess.

“So far we've been completely bowled over by the response. Hopefully delis of all shapes and sizes will be celebrating as the competition builds up,” he adds.

There are signs this has already started.

“We're chuffed to bits to have been put forward and voted for by our customers,” said Charlie O’Donnell, owner of Grassroots Organic.

“We love finding new foods and flavours and try to offer customers something special every day of the year, which is why people keep coming back,” he added.

The competition will run until the end of June, when judges will visit the finalists. The winning deli will then we rewarded with a trip to Spain, coinciding with an olive harvest so they can learn from the experts.
