Despite opening during the difficult economic climate, Croots Farm Shop has proven that a strong business plan, clear focus and quality produce really can prove a successful recipe for today's consumers.

More than 70,000 people have visited Croots during the 12 months and since opening in June 2008, the farm shop has sold an estimated 20,000lbs of sausages, which, stretched end to end, would reach the 11.8 miles from Duffield to Ashbourne. It has also served up about 130,000 cups of tea and more than 31,000 scones from its incredibly successful on-site coffee shop.

Now the cafe, at Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road, has organised a fun-filled programme of entertainment for its first birthday party, including a competition to win £50 of Croots vouchers, face painting, beer sampling sessions with Nutbrook Brewery, a BBQ and demonstrations of Shire horse shoeing.

Owner, Steve Croot, says, "We opened our doors just as a recession was about to hit and at the start of the credit crunch, so it was probably not the best time to be launching a business.

"But our first year has been absolutely brilliant and exceeded all expectations. We can't thank our customers enough for the support that they've given us during our first 12 months."
