PROGRESS FOR SPECIALITY BREAD

Publicity is set to soar for independent bakeries thanks to a new injection of funding into the Real Bread Campaign
Launched last November by food and farming charity, Sustain, the campaign has now secured a grant from the Big Lottery Fund’s Local Food scheme.
The aim is to promote the benefits of locally produced, homemade bread with the support of speciality bakeries.
It will focus on developing both commercial and domestic bread-making skills across the country.
“This extra funding is a fantastic boost for the Real Bread Campaign in our continuing fight for the improvement of bread in Britain,” says Richard Watts, campaigns director for Sustain.
Community cafés, local projects and public institutions, such as schools and hospitals, all stand to benefit from the high profile push.
“This is an exciting campaign, which could have a real impact on the accessibility of locally produced bread, so we are happy to support it,” says Mark Wheddon, programme manager for the Local Food scheme.
Other organisations that offer support to the industry are invited to apply for financial help.
“The Local Food scheme will be funding further projects across the country and is accepting applications that clearly meet its key objectives,” adds Mr Wheddon.
The closing date is the 21st August 2009.
