  • Streets with a high concentration of quality food businesses will be recognised by the Google Street View Awards

The search engine giant has shortlisted 20 of the country’s best ‘Foodie Streets’, with the help of industry names such as Henrietta Green (founder of foodloversbritain.com), Roopa Gulati (Good Food) and Nicholas Lander (Financial Times).

Areas were picked for their diverse mix of delicatessens, market stalls, restaurants and cafés.

“So many British streets have the same generic selection of chain stores and restaurants.  Anything that promotes the great work independent retailers do to give our towns and cities colour is to be congratulated,” said Henrietta Green, judge.

Commended streets include Fossgate in York, Charlotte Street in London and High Street in Conwy.

“This is great news. It’s fantastic that Google has recognised the delights of Conwy. This area of the world doesn’t get that much attention, even though it’s a world heritage site. Hopefully the nomination will bring more people to the area,” said Mark Sillwell, owner of Stillwells Bon Bons.

The awards were launched in anticipation of further imagery being added to Google’s Street View tool. It currently allows users to view and navigate 360º street-level imagery in 25 British towns. Consumers are invited to view the selected streets and vote for their favourite online.

Other award categories include Britain’s Most Picturesque Street and Best Fashion Street.

Voting closes on 28th February. The winner will be announced in March.
