OilWell: Bringing a lighter, fruitier olive oil to UK shelves

When the husband and wife founders of OilWell, Bastijn and Rachel Siedenburg, launched their product three months ago, their ambition was simple but bold: to change the way people in the UK think about olive oil.

They were frustrated by what they found on supermarket shelves. Oils that were often heavy, flat or bitter, with none of the freshness they had enjoyed in the wide variety of olive oils available in Spain.

OilWell fills that gap. The brand offers a light, fruity extra virgin olive oil with a clean, balanced flavour that works just as well for drizzling and dipping as it does for cooking.

OilWell is made from single-origin Arbequina olives grown in Lleida, Catalonia. Arbequina is prized for its delicacy and natural fruitiness, producing an oil that feels smooth and fresh rather than overpowering.

The olives are harvested early and cold-pressed within hours, capturing their bright flavour. The result is an oil with subtle fruit notes and a gentle peppery lift, without the harshness that often puts UK shoppers off. For many first-time tasters, the response is surprise that olive oil can be this light and approachable.

Packaging with purpose

The oil is presented in a 500ml squeeze bottle - a format designed for modern kitchens. For chefs, it means precision and control. For home cooks, it is practical, clean and attractive on the counter.
To strengthen its retail appeal, every bottle comes in a presentation box. This creates an immediate gifting option and a strong shelf presence. For farm shops, food halls and hampers, it offers a ready-made premium product that requires no extra packaging.

Why the timing is right

Consumers are steadily trading up in olive oil. Across the UK, shoppers are moving away from mass blends and seeking products with provenance and flavour. Premium olive oil is now seen as a finishing ingredient as much as a cooking staple.

OilWell sits firmly within this shift. At RRP £13.95 it offers an accessible but premium step-up. For retailers, it is a product that combines quality with distinctiveness, not just another olive oil, but one that tells a clear story.

Although OilWell is more expensive than regular supermarket olive oil, the quality at this price point means it is designed for daily use. Customers are drizzling it over roasted vegetables, dressing simple tomato salads, or stirring it into hummus. Its fruitiness makes it ideal for dipping fresh bread, while its lightness means it can be used freely in cooking.

The current range is deliberately simple: one 500ml bottle in a gift box. This clarity makes it easy to merchandise, position in hampers, or highlight in seasonal displays. The design bridges practicality and premium styling, giving customers confidence to purchase as both a kitchen staple and a gift.

OilWell introduces UK consumers to a flavour profile they rarely encounter: light, fruity and versatile. It combines provenance from Spanish groves, functional packaging designed for chefs, and presentation suited to premium retail.

For retailers, the advantage is clear, a distinctive product with strong shelf impact, a gifting angle, and a taste that speaks for itself. In a market where many oils blend into one another, OilWell offers a genuine point of difference.

“We wanted to bring the kind of olive oil we love cooking with at home to a wider audience – something fresh, balanced and versatile. OilWell is about showing people that olive oil can be light, fruity and exciting, not just functional. Something to be used everyday, not just special occasions,” the founders say.

With consumers choosing better and retailers seeking new premium stories, OilWell is well positioned to deliver.
