  • Asda is today committing to stocking 15,000 local products by 2011. The news comes in the week that Asda has increased its local product offer by 600 products across the UK.

The announcement coincides with the supermarket celebrating ‘Local Week’ from 29th September to 5th October, which will showcase the very best local produce in Asda stores. During Local Week, 600 new local products will enter stores across the UK, to add to the 6,000 existing local products, supplied by Asda’s 15 local distribution hubs.

The aim to stock 15,000 local products by 2011 is a bold commitment by the retailer and is a sign of confidence in the unique hub system, which now covers most of the UK.

Julia Tweedie, marketing manager local sourcing and ethnics at Asda, said, “Our customers want local produce and they want it at good value. By working with local distribution hubs, we are able to take care of the transport and administration costs for small, local suppliers. This means that local artisans don’t have to sacrifice the quality of their products, nor are they priced out of supplying to ASDA, meaning it really does provide the ideal system of getting the best local products to our customers.”

The use of local hubs also means that less food miles are travelled by local products getting to Asda shelves and the saving currently stands at three million road miles a year, meaning it is also better for the environment.
