  • The combination of big supermarkets, retail outlets and increased online shopping has forced a deli owner to shut up shop

After 18 years of service, Mike Hargreaves, owner of Goose Green Deli in Altrincham has had to close the door of his dying food business.

“This year has been very difficult, we still had the regulars but not the passing trade and things came to a head in the autumn. It was quite a relief at the end, a bit like the end of a prison sentence because we had been working very hard but still losing money despite that.

“While it saddens me, it’s a sign of the times and I don’t think anyone can do anything about it, we can’t wave a magic wand,” said Mike.

In its heyday the deli stocked a wide range of fine cheeses, salamis and ambient products.
