  • County food group Hampshire Fare toasted twenty years of promoting local food and drink at the end of February

Over 140 shop owners, producers, farmers and restaurateurs from around the area flocked to the anniversary celebration, held at the Guildhall in Winchester. Hampshire Fare represents around 200 businesses, ranging from small start-up companies with only one or two employees to multi-national organisations.

Alison Grange, co-owner of Durleighmarsh Farm Shop in Petersfield, said: “We have been members of Hampshire Fare for 15 years and find it a great way to meet other businesses and suppliers. It is also a great way to keep in touch with new events and ideas. It’s good to feel part of the ‘Hampshire Fare’ family!”

Members receive PR guidance, marketing advice, networking and signposting support and help with with trade development.

Richard Pollen, co-owner of Pollen True Taste in Bramshott Chase, said: “Who you know is all important in business and Hampshire Fare knows a lot of all important people through its influential network of members, friends and sponsors throughout Hampshire.

The food group was established in 1991 by a small collective of farmers and producers who wanted a stronger voice to promote the benefits of buying local and support the rural economy.

Helen Sutherland, a founder member and former chairman of Hampshire Fare, said; “I really can’t believe we formed the group 20 years ago. At the initial meeting when we proposed setting up the group the initial joining fee of £30 seemed a huge amount of money.

“What a difference 20 years has made. I’m not assuming that life isn’t still a struggle for many of the farmers and growers but with the help of Hampshire Fare quite a number have been able to make a success of their efforts,” she added.
