  • An Epsom cake designer is enlisting the trade to raise money for the Haiti Earthquake Appeal

Janet Mohapi-Banks [picture inset] has named 26th March as National Cakes for Haiti Day.

Retailers, schools, universities and organisations across the country are all expected to take part in the bake sale.

“I’m trying to get as many delis and farm shops as possible to donate a percentage of their bakery sales to the appeal,” said Janet, owner and founder of Janet Mohapi-Banks Sculptural Cake Design.

“It’s a worthy charity that people really care about. Customers don’t need much encouraging to break the diet if it’s for a good cause!” she laughed.

“I spoke to a few friends and they all wanted to do something more than just give money, so I decided to organise an event that everyone could take part in,” she explained.

Food companies across the country have been organising similar events for the appeal; Kemp Town Deli in Brighton donated cupcakes to be sold at the local Art For Haiti event (27th February); and five top chefs, including John Burton Race and Atul Kochar, cooked a special five-course fundraising dinner to raise money (8th February).
