Meet the Producer: Belvoir Farm - naturally good drinks

Belvoir Farm may be one of the UK’s most recognised premium cordial and sparkling drinks brands, but its heart is firmly rooted in its home, in the midst of the Leicestershire countryside.

This landscape, of wild hedgerows, wildflower meadows thriving with bees and butterflies, and woodland dotted with bird boxes, is echoed in the delightful botanical illustrations etched onto Belvoir Farm’s labelling.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been so surrounded by nature,” says shopper marketing manager Harry Clark, talking about the farm where he and his closeknit team of 80 colleagues spend their days bringing Belvoir Farm’s drinks to life.

The environment they work in is a constant reminder of the core values of the brand. To create delicious cordials and sparkling drinks, while working in harmony with nature.

This ethos has been with Belvoir Farm since the beginning, in 1984, when director Pev Manners’ mother Mary conjured a beautifully-bright, delicate and delicious elderflower cordial in their home kitchen, made with dainty flowerheads gathered from nearby trees as they came into bloom.

Friends and family were so entranced by the drink that Mary took it to local farmers’ markets and shops.

Almost 40 years on, this very same recipe remains the beating heart of the business. Something that makes the cordial especially wonderful is the fact that, to this day, the local community is involved in its creation.

Harry explains, “Every year we have an elderflower harvest, which is really unique to us. Between May and June we have six really amazing weeks where our 60 acres of organic elderflower come alive. We have a team of pickers, and we advertise for local people to come and help us.

“What’s incredible is that those flowers are bottled within a very short space of time. Once picked, they are infused with sliced lemons for 24 hours and are ready to be bottled just a day later!”

Beyond the lovely, quintessentially English Elderflower Cordial, Belvoir Farm has created a further 19 flavours, spanning the seasons, from ripe Raspberry & Lemon, through to punchy Ginger cordial ideal for the autumn months, and into cooler days with a Mulled Winter Cordial.

As we close in on the cooler months, with consumers switching into sweaters and wellies, Belvoir Farm’s ready to drink punches really do come into their own too. Available in a 750ml format, and designed to be gently warmed, they include Festive Fruit, Spiced Ginger, and Mulled Winter.

A delicious alternative

The no and low alcohol market has seen real growth over the past three years, as more consumers look to moderate their intake of wine, beer and spirits.

Constantly innovating, Belvoir Farm was on the cusp of this burgeoning trend, and has responded by expanding upon its already popular Gently Sparkling collection (available in 250ml and 750ml bottles, and 250ml and 330ml cans across 18 flavours).

In 2021 a non-alcoholic cocktail range was introduced. “Certainly, since Covid-19, we’ve found people are wanting a healthier lifestyle, and have been looking for something different,” says Harry. The trio of 750ml bottled drinks includes Passionfruit Martini infused with tropical fruit and Madagascan vanilla, Peach Bellini, and Lime and Yuzu Mojito. These are now available in handy 250ml cans, ideal for parties and events.

Belvoir Farm has carved out a position as a bartender’s friend too, with a new sparkling mixers category added in 2022, designed to be combined with spirits, or simply poured over ice, and crowned with a garnish.

At just 20 calories per 100ml, in a 150ml can format, the range pushes boundaries, incorporating evocative, super premium ingredients. Floral Fizz marries elderflower with hibiscus and geranium, while Spicy Ginger is a peppy medley of yuzu, ginger and sancho peppercorn.

As with all Belvoir Farm products, fruit and flavour come first. Every recipe is 100% natural.

A new approach

With new HFSS legislation in place, and consumers increasingly considering their sugar intake, Belvoir has launched into the sugar-free arena. Packed with flavour, and naturally sweetened with stevia, and nothing artificial, the brand’s No Added Sugar cordials are available now in three flavours – Exotic Mango & Passionfruit (6 calories per serving), Elderflower & Apple (13 calories per serving), and Sicilian Lemon (13 calories per serving).

“They all fit in with our mantra to be naturally delicious. There’s no compromise at all on taste,” says Harry.

Working with nature

“Our sustainability mantra is to give back more than we take, and to tread lightly on the land,” says Harry. “We send no waste to landfill, we’ve planted 10,000 trees since 1984, and we do lots of things on the farm to enhance and promote nature. Our aim is to run on 100% renewable energy by 2025.”

Most recently, Belvoir Farm has partnered with The Woodland Trust, to promote the charity (which shares so many of its values), while helping to protect precious woodlands across the UK.

“We have limited edition products with the new special labelling, across our core ranges, in store now. Our aim is to help them restore over 160 acres of wood and trees. Also linking into this is the artwork on our bottles. We asked students at the University of the Arts London to come up with the design, so we’re hopefully helping to foster the next generation of creatives.”
