Fake Food Scandal

The research carried out in West Yorkshire showed that some mozzarella products contain only 50 per cent real cheese, that some frozen prawns are half water, and some ham used for pizza is actually made from chicken or meat emulsion. The contents of fruit juices were also called into question, with some containing additives which are not permitted in the EU.

The tests were carried out on 900 food samples from the region, and the results of 38 per cent of these have been described as alarming.

The scandal has led to questions about the mislabelling of food products, and cost-cutting by local authorities who are responsible for carrying out the tests in their area but have failed to do so.
