  • Five farm shops, a farmers' market and a pick-your-own were celebrated at the eighth annual FARMA Awards ceremony (January 26th)

Winners were decided on the quality of their food, marketing prowess, management and commitment to the environment.

“Every year the standard of these awards gets higher and the competition tougher. Farm retailing is a challenging industry but it’s one that is still bursting with opportunities,” said Mike Blee, former farm shop retailer and chairman of judges.

West Yorkshire retailer Farmer Copleys Farm Shop was named Farm Retailer of the Year, singled out for its £multimillion expansion.

The shop now has a 10.5 metre butchery counter, extensive fresh produce selection and admirable customer service.

“There are plenty of award ceremonies in the industry, but this one is really special because it’s peer-assessed. Being complemented by individuals we regard so highly and look up to feels wonderful,” said Heather Copley, owner.

Copleys is now looking to launch a new online shop on the back of the accolade.

“FARMA is an organisation with clout, so we hope the association will boost sales and increase our reputation around the rest of the country,” she added.

Other winners include Beadlam Grange Farm Shop - (Environmental award and Best New Farm Shop award) - and Garsons PYO - best pick-your-own.

The ceremony was held in Shropshire as part of the revamped FARM+MORE Conference and Trade Show.
