  • In the face of changing consumer and public procurement demand for locally sourced, British produce, a new trade show in the West Country looks set to connect buyers with suppliers from the UK’s foremost producing region.

Despite the Government’s less than commendable local sourcing achievements, the public as a whole is fast changing its approach to purchasing local produce. Indeed, consumer demand has escalated exponentially in the last few years and statistics now show that 83% of shoppers want to buy locally sourced food.

As the UK’s foremost food producing region, the South West is in a unique position to respond to these changing purchasing patterns. John Sheaves, chief executive of the region’s food promotion agency Taste of the West , is well placed to comment confirming, “The appeal of local products is higher than any other ethical alternative at the moment and that includes organic and fair trade. As a result, the government and food and drink industry alike must now face up to the market and deliver.”

Doors open
Recognising the need to respond to these demands has resulted in the first Taste of the West Trade Show, which will be held on 21st and 22nd April 2008. Mr Sheaves continues, ”This increase in consumer demand is directly resulting in retail, food service and procurement trade buyers contacting Taste of the West for help and information. Taste of the West is therefore delighted to be working with Hale Events in the organisation of such a focussed trade event that will bring buyers and suppliers from all over the UK together over two days, helping to create the key relationships necessary to effectively satisfy changing consumer demands for UK origin produce.”

Trade buyers can look forward to developing relationships with the South West’s finest food and drink producers, all in one location. Exhibitors range from established businesses supplying nationwide outlets – for example Combe Farm Wholesale will be showing their Yeo Valley yoghurt range – to smaller home industries looking to expand their customer base. Other exhibitors include Cornish Sea Salt Co, who have recently started production of natural sea salt from Westcountry waters; Luscombe Organic Drinks; Cheese maker, Quickes Traditional; Multi award-winning Lyme Bay Winery; Olives et Al; St Austell Brewery Ltd, Dorset Cereals, Gamers Cider and many more.

The Taste of the West Trade Show is for trade buyers only who can register online to receive pre-show information and a free entry badge, with Taste of the West members receiving a preferential exhibition rate. Visit www.tasteofthewesttradeshow.co.uk for more information.
