  • A farm shop owner is celebrating after her rare bred meat won a Gold award and featured on a BBC food series

Stephanie Camm, manager of Minting Park Farm Shop, near Horncastle breeds one of the rarest variety of pig known as a ‘lop’. The farm shop has only been open for four years and it has already won 20 awards and has featured on the Great British Food Revival.

The award set up by the British Pig Executive is only given to producers that scored 95% or more during the taste test.

Mrs Camm said, “We think we have done very well. We only operate on a small scale and are happy with the numbers of animals we have. The lop pig is a traditional breed, not a commercial one. That means it has more fat, which can really add to the flavour.

“A lot of traditional breeds were approaching extinction because the commercial ones became much more popular, but lop pigs are fantastic animals with a good taste and are easy to look after.

“The lop was recently featured in a show hosted by Clarissa Dickson Wright and we got an increase of orders just from that after people saw what they could do with them.”
