  • Following confirmation of a second case of foot and mouth disease in Surrey, retailers are becoming increasingly worried about supplies of fresh meat.

The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has confirmed there had been a positive test result for foot-and-mouth at another farm near the original outbreak. Cows at the site were culled on Monday evening on suspicion of their having contracted the disease.

Retailers were saying yesterday that they have sufficient supplies for the time being but would have to look at contingency plans if the movement of animals is restricted beyond the end of the week.
