Welsh Government Considers Measures to Cut Waste

It is considering a range of measures, including the possibility of extending the 5p charge on plastic bags to packaging.

Environmental campaigners have increased pressure on MPs to cut the amount of waste going to landfills, after the plastic bag charge was widely seen as a success.

Haf Elgar, of Friends of the Earth Cymru, said, “When it came to plastic bags, it was fairly simple to put the onus on the consumer and that move has helped to reduce the use of plastic bags significantly. But when it comes to packaging, the change has to come from retailers and manufacturers. Friends of the Earth would like to see more responsibility in manufacturing.

“There’s an increasing demand from consumers and customers for buying more ethically, responsibly and in a way that is environmentally friendly. In the Environment Centre in Swansea, you can refill Ecover cleaning products to save on buying it in a new container each time, for example.”
