The campaign, spearheaded by Business West, involves sending hampers filled with food and drink products to buyers overseas. With the biggest trade shows postponed or cancelled due to Covid-19, the hampers give buyers the opportunity to trial and buy British products.
UK suppliers can register to be part of the Great British Food Programme Directory, from which international buyers can select items. Companies included in a hamper will have the opportunity to present to the buyer via phone. An initial 120 hampers will be sent out, the first of which went to Dubai and included product from Mr Lees Noodle Co and other British producers.
Paul Abley, international innovation & delivery manager at the Department of International Trade, worked in tandem with Business West to develop the innovative box idea with their team of food and drink experts. He said, “Each company whose products are featured in the ‘Smart Distance Selling Process’ hampers could well generate an additional £100,000 a year in business at what is a vital time for companies seeking to trade through coronavirus successfully and by so doing help the British economy recover.
“These hampers are just like a trade show without the personal contact due to coronavirus. It is unlikely we are going to be seeing any major food and drink shows anywhere until early next year, so this is the next best thing to promote the best of British food and drink by actually putting these hampers in the hands of buyers all over the world.”
