Northern Ireland: A must-visit foodie region

For such a small size, Northern Ireland is punching well above its weight in terms of food quality and experience. There is a real energy simmering in Northern Ireland, and we are now firmly on the culinary map for visitors who want to experience high quality produce, crafted by passionate and talent people.

From Michelin-rated chefs to award-winning brewers, distillers, cider and chocolate makers, Northern Ireland is a must-visit destination for lovers of food and drink. The giant spirited people of Northern Ireland and our legendary hospitality uniquely sets us apart from other destinations. Whether you visit a Belfast pub or a farm in County Fermanagh, we have a strong food identity and a wealth of local specialities to try.

Armagh is also known as the Orchard County, so it’s not surprising to arrive here and experience some of the finest ciders, made with the Armagh Bramley Apple which has PGI accreditation. Another two local products share the same unique accreditation: the Comber Earlie Potato, best served skin on, with a knob of Abernethy hand rolled butter and a little bit of salt and pepper to season; and Lough Neagh Eels, delicious pan friend, serving up an exceptional smoked taste!

Of course, the best way to find out about a destination is to meet the makers, take a food tour or get hands on with a food and drink experience. Right across all parts of Northern Ireland, we have some incredible opportunities to learn about our food and drink including the opportunity to visit Northern Ireland’s smallest Distillery at Killowen, to learn how they produce their award winning poitin, or to make traditional griddle breads including soda, potato and wheaten bread at Tracey’s Farmhouse Kitchen on the shores of Strangford Lough or to taste bean to bar chocolate, handcrafted by husband and wife, Shane and Dorothy at Neary Nogs in County Down.

Collaboration is at the heart of food and drink in Northern Ireland. In recent years, we have seen tremendous growth in chefs, food and drink networks and experience providers, who collaborate to deliver world- class festivals, events and experiences for visitors to enjoy at all times of the year.
