Deli Voted Uk’s Best Sandwich Retailer

  • A Bristol deli has beaten several multiples – including Subway, Pret A Manger and Eat – to be named the UK's best sandwich business

Chandos Deli was crowned Specialist Sandwich Bar Chain of the Year at the Sammies Awards, held as part of British Sandwich Week (9th to15th May). Despite having just eight stores scattered around Bath, Bristol and Exeter, the business beat Pret a Manger, which has stores nationwide and in the USA, and American giant Subway, which has over 1,250 franchised stores across the country.

“It’s great to have won a bun fight with massive businesses such as Subway. We opened our first store on Bristol’s Chandos Road back in 1992 with the ambition to make and serve fantastic food and our approach remains unchanged,” said Iain Keith-Smith, owner, and founder.

The delicatessens have gradually built up a loyal lunchtime following, selling a selection of traditional and more imaginative sandwiches and baguettes. Customers can choose from an extensive range continental charcuterie products, speciality cheeses and unusual condiments – all available to buy in-store. The company has also worked with Gloucestershire-based producer Hobbs House Bakery to create a distinctive baguette recipe, giving its menu an edge over the mass-produced bread served by larger businesses.

“Winning the Sammy Award this year is a great pat on the back for all involved. It’s a reminder that we’re getting the basics right and that our honest approach to fabulous food keeps our customers coming back for more each day,” added Mr Keith-Smith.

“I like to think we’ve succeeded because of our passion for sourcing wonderful ingredients from around the world and our ability to share our knowledge and enthusiasm with consumers. We never grow tired of sharing the delicious things we discover,” he concludes.

The Sammy Awards were held at the Grange St Paul’s Hotel in London on Thursday 13th May.
