  • With National BBQ Week set to start on Monday 25th May, delis are being advised to get their burgers, sausages and barbecue tongs at the ready for a rush of sales.

Running for its 13th year, National BBQ Week (25th - 31st May) provides an ideal opportunity for independent retailers to reap the benefits of this lucrative market. With thousands of barbecues likely to take place right through the summer, delis should be giving this area some serious thought.

One food store has already taken the bull by the horns with plans afoot to boost barbecue takings over the coming week.

From Saturday 23rd May, Lewis & Cooper is celebrating eight days of barbecue-themed offers, tastings and contests. Three luxurious hampers, together worth more than £260, will be on offer to entrants to a free competition, as well as a second chance to win a giant jar of Tracklements Onion Marmalade.

Both the Northallerton High Street Store, and its newly-opened shop in Yarm High Street will be getting involved. “Among the barbecue favourites on special offer are sauces, salad dressings and packs of premium British meats, sausages and burgers, together with marshmallows for toasting on the embers and Fentimans old-fashioned soft drinks,” says a spokesperson for the retailer.

Retailers are advised to bring their high quality meats into centre stage and use well-placed branding to entice customers to buy their barbecue favourites from them, rather than the supermarket.
