Island Bakery Wins Environment Award

Island Bakery Organics, an organic biscuit maker based in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, won the Environment Award for its environment-friendly production. The company’s new factory premises harnesses the power of local, sustainable and renewable energy, with the ovens fuelled by the island’s supply of wood and a nearby river providing hydro-electricity.

Joe Reade, owner of Island Bakery said, “I am delighted with the recognition this award gives us. It makes the extra effort we went to in powering our factory only from renewable sources worthwhile. The easy thing to do would have been to just plug into the grid and run an oil boiler. We have had quite a few teething troubles in the past year, so all our staff have to take credit for persevering with us.”
