Thousands of animals have died as large amounts of snow settled in Cumbria, the Pennines, the Peak District, Shropshire and north Wales.

The NFU is working with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to try and help some farmers who have lost money due to the crisis.

Helicopters have also been dropping food to farms in isolated areas in a bid to help look after livestock.

Charles Sercombe, livestock board chairman for the NFU, said, “That’s why it is so important that consumers continue to buy British lamb in support of those farmers who’ve been dealing with the bad weather over the last year. You really expect decent weather at the end of March and I fear that significant numbers of lambs will have been lost in the snow.”
