  • As the environmental debate rages on, Brighton has declared a blanket ban on plastic bags.

Originally councillors were looking to ask the council’s chief executive to write to the Government demanding a 20p tax on every plastic bag, similar to the levy introduced in the Republic of Ireland.

However, instead councillors voted for a revised, tough motion to lobby MPs and parliament for an outright ban on bags.

Last month, local authorities in London began a public consultation on whether to ban bags or impose a levy.
