  • An award winning North Yorkshire pub has opened an on-site deli, selling seasonal foods that reflect its gourmet restaurant menu

The Crown Inn at Great Ouseburn near York held the official opening of its new venture, The Crown Deli, last weekend and foodies have already been flocking to the store.

Housed in the back of the pub, the shop allows customers to take home some of the same fresh North Yorkshire produce that goes into the inn’s top-quality cuisine, including meat, fish, cheese and seasonal fruit and vegetables. The deli will also offer bread that is freshly baked in-house and a selection of fine wines.

The owners, Liz and Paul Jackson, are now inviting local food and drink producers to suggest other lines that they can sell in the deli. “Some of the fresh produce we use is actually sourced from right here in Great Ouseburn,” says Mrs Jackson.

“Many village residents and customers grow their own fruit and vegetables, and we have made it known locally that we are happy to buy any surplus from them to use in our restaurant. The supplier is even given a credit on the menu,” she continues.

“It would be great if we could expand the range of products we offer for sale as time goes on and support our community at the same time. We’d love it if local producers would get in touch with us so we can discuss how to work together.”

The husband and wife team have only been running The Crown Inn for around 18 months, but in that short time they have successfully developed it from a closed-down business into one of the area’s most talked-about gastropubs, offering an impressive menu based on fresh, local produce.
