5 minutes with Valerio Simonetti, Mr Organic

What would you be doing if you weren’t in the food industry?
I am the 3d generation of tomato producers in my family, and I have been in the food industry all my life. I would have loved to have been a singer - but I am not very in tune!

What was your first job?
My first job was in my father company. He got me started very early, so during summer holidays at the age of 14 I did a couple of months of work. I started at the end of the production line picking cases by hand.

What inspires you?
I believe that there is no benefit in doing a job that is harmful to others. So organic and vegan is the best combination for an ethical way of doing business – and this inspires me every day.

What’s the worst job you’ve done?
I haven’t really had any job that I didn’t like – I’m very lucky!

What’s your favourite part of the job?
I enjoy when I see good reviews about the quality of our products.

And your least favourite?
I don’t like it when I see bad reviews about our products!

How about the food industry?
I have some concern about the food industry, but I think it’s getting better and better as consumer demand for ethical products has risen, and this is amazing to see.

What would be your last supper?
Pizza – I am Italian after all!

What’s your motto?
Live and let live

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?
I am very basic with my food, so have never really had anything too weird.

What’s your favourite book?
Way of the peaceful warrior.

Sweet or savoury?
Savoury
